Pros and Cons of Diesel Engines | Advantages and Disadvantages of Diesel Engines

Introduction : What is Diesel Engine?

In the late 19th century, Dr. Rudolf Diesel invented an engine. It was called the Diesel Engine after him. These diesel engines work by burning diesel fuel. Diesel engines are also an internal combustion engine. Diesel engines operate by compressing air from the exhaust or residual combustion gases. Diesel engines have both advantages and disadvantages when compared to other types of engines.

Pros of Diesel Engines

  1. Better Fuel Efficiency (A major advantage of diesel engines compared to other types of engines is their very high fuel efficiency. The efficiency is high due to two reasons. The first is that the higher compression rating produces more power with less fuel. The second is that it has a higher energy density than petrol engines due to the longer carbon chain)
  2. Absence of spark plug (The absence of spark plugs provides more advantages to an engine. Diesel engines generally use compressed air to burn fuel. It has advantages such as reduced electrical breakdowns, no ignition tune-up and replacement requirements)
  3. Cheaper fuel (Diesel oil is least expensive when compared to other mineral oils. But diesel engines run on diesel fuel are more efficient. Getting more efficient work done at lower fuel costs is a benefit)
  4. Better torque (Diesel engines provide higher torque than petrol engines. Slower fuel combustion and higher compression result in higher torque. Torque intensifies the ability to pull weight and accelerate. Therefore, it is suitable for heavy and large vehicles as well as industrial machines)
  5. Long durability (Normally, diesel engines have more durability than other engines. Stronger materials are used to manufacture diesel engines because of their higher compression. It helps to improve durability of engine)

Cons of Diesel Engines

  1. Makes a loud noise (Compared to other engines, diesel engines emit a lot of noise during operation)
  2. Expensive (Diesel engines are made by stronger materials. So normally, diesel engines are expensive because of manufacturing cost is high)
  3. Poor performance in cold weather (After parking diesel engine vehicle at outside in cold climate, it may be difficult to start it)
